SCM, PLM and MES: what is the difference?

These acronyms often appear together, but they solve different problems. Start with where business data breaks, who needs it and which operational issue is most urgent.

SCM coordinates the supply chain

SCM focuses on suppliers, purchasing, order delivery and inventory coordination so planning and execution information can move across the supply chain.

PLM manages product information and change

PLM connects product data, versions, approvals and changes so development, purchasing and production work from consistent information.

MES manages shop-floor execution

MES records operations, work orders, reporting, quality and traceability, connecting shop-floor events back to planning and management.

Which should come first?

If the issue is purchasing and delivery, assess SCM. If it is product data and version changes, assess PLM. If it is shop-floor execution and traceability, assess MES. When issues overlap, align data definitions and system boundaries before building in phases.
